Ritesh Agarwal was born in 1993 in Bissam Cuttack, Odisha, in a middle-class family. He had a passion for computers and software since childhood, and learned programming languages from Google and books. He also developed an interest in traveling and exploring different places, which led him to start his first venture, Oravel Stays, in 2011. Oravel Stays was an online platform that aggregated bed and breakfasts across India.
In 2013, Agarwal was selected as one of the recipients of the Thiel Fellowship, a prestigious program that awards $100,000 to young entrepreneurs who drop out of college to pursue their innovative ideas. He was the first resident Asian to receive this honour. He used the grant to pivot Oravel Stays into OYO Rooms, a network of standardized and budget-friendly hotels that catered to the needs of the mass market. In 2019, Agarwal also made a bold move to increase his stake in OYO from 10% to 30%, by buying back shares worth $2 billion from the existing investors. He also created a new entity, RA Hospitality Holdings, to facilitate this transaction. This deal valued OYO at $10 billion, making it one of the most valuable startups in India. It also made Agarwal one of the youngest billionaires in the world, with a net worth of $1.1 billion, according to Forbes.
